It all began in ………, during a trip through northern Italy. While exploring the Piedmont region, I had the unforgettable chance to join local truffle hunters and their Lagottos in the forest. Watching these dogs work was absolutely captivating. Their focus, their energy, and the clear connection with their handlers made a lasting impact on me.
These were not ordinary dogs. The Lagotto Romagnolo represents centuries of Italian heritage. I learned how close the breed came to disappearing, and how passionately people have worked to protect its authentic qualities. Meeting breeders who spoke with deep respect about the breed made me realize how special these dogs really are.
After returning home, I could not stop thinking about them. I dove into research, reached out to breeders and experts across the world, and eventually brought home my first Lagotto from authentic Italian bloodlines. From the moment ……. arrived, I was completely hooked. Her intelligence, sweet nature, and remarkable nose amazed me every day.
She was more than a pet. She became my guide to understanding the true soul of the Lagotto. The joy in swimming, the love for digging, the endless curiosity, and that incredible drive to work alongside people. I knew I had found something rare.
As I connected with other Lagotto enthusiasts in the United States, it became clear that something was missing. There were very few breeders focused on preserving authentic bloodlines and even fewer who were doing it ethically. Families wanted these wonderful dogs, but finding healthy puppies from trustworthy sources was a real challenge.
I saw an opportunity to do something meaningful. Not just to breed puppies, but to educate others about this rare Italian treasure and ensure the breed’s best qualities would not be lost. Their hypoallergenic coats, their truffle hunting instincts, their gentle temperament, and their brilliance all deserved to be protected.
Starting Golden Truffle Lagotto was never about becoming just another kennel. It was about creating a breeding program dedicated to:
Protecting authentic Italian lines
Focusing on health and genetic diversity
Teaching people about the breed’s unique heritage
Supporting the working traditions of truffle hunting
Producing puppies that reflect the heart and soul of the breed
I spent years building relationships with respected breeders in Italy, studying health testing, learning about canine genetics, and refining what it means to raise a truly exceptional Lagotto.
At Golden Truffle Lagotto, I keep things small by design. I only raise a few litters each year because I believe every puppy deserves the very best start. That means more time, more love, and the individual attention they need to grow into well rounded dogs.
Each decision I make is guided by the question: Does this pairing help preserve what makes the Lagotto special? I focus on temperament, health, and purpose every single time.
I never breed a dog without a full panel of health evaluations. My dogs go through:
Hip and elbow evaluations
Eye exams by board certified ophthalmologists
Genetic testing for breed specific issues
Neurological screening
Temperament testing
For me, this is not about doing the minimum. It is about protecting the long term well being of every dog I bring into the world.
Though many puppies become amazing family companions, I care deeply about the working roots of this breed. I stay involved with truffle cultivators, participate in working dog events, and provide resources to families who want to explore truffle training.
That drive to work is still inside every Lagotto. It is a gift that deserves to be respected and encouraged.
Life here revolves around the dogs. My mornings begin with feeding, grooming, and health checks. The dogs enjoy plenty of exercise, from long walks to swim sessions and playtime in open spaces.
The puppies are handled multiple times a day and exposed to new sights and sounds to build confidence. I believe the first eight weeks shape the rest of a dog’s life, and I treat those weeks with care and intention.
All my puppies are raised in my home, not in kennels. They grow up hearing the vacuum, the television, kids laughing, and doors opening. These experiences teach them that the world is safe and interesting.
Before they leave for their new homes, puppies have already experienced:
Introduction to water and swimming
Different surfaces and textures
Car rides and travel
Basics of crate training
Early grooming routines
Foundational scent work games
I am careful about placing my puppies. Not because I want to exclude people, but because I want each one to succeed. That means learning about your lifestyle, your experience with dogs, and your hopes for this new companion.
I take time with every family because this is not about making a sale. It is about building relationships and setting both dogs and people up for success.
When you bring home a Golden Truffle Lagotto puppy, you join a family. I stay in touch, answer questions, provide advice, and celebrate milestones with you.
The greatest joy of this work is seeing the dogs I raise live joyful lives and hearing stories about the happiness they bring to their people.
My dream is for Golden Truffle Lagotto to help lead the way in protecting the future of the Lagotto Romagnolo in the United States. I want to see more of these incredible dogs working in truffle orchards, appearing in loving homes, and thriving under breeders who care deeply about doing things right.
Every litter I raise is a small step toward that goal. It is my way of honoring a breed that deserves to be known and loved for generations to come.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about my journey. If you feel that the Lagotto Romagnolo may be the right breed for you, I would be honored to help you find the perfect puppy to welcome into your life.
