The Lagotto Romagnolo’s story starts in the marshlands of Romagna, Italy, during the Renaissance. Originally bred as water retrievers, these dogs were strong swimmers with a natural love for the outdoors.
As the wetlands disappeared over time, so did the need for water dogs. But the Lagotto found a new purpose. Their extraordinary noses and digging instincts made them perfect for tracking down truffles, turning them into one of the most sought after working dogs in Europe.
By the 1970s, the Lagotto was close to disappearing, but devoted breeders revived the breed, preserving its defining traits. The FCI recognized it in 1995, and the AKC followed in 2015. Today, it remains the world’s only purebred dog specifically developed for truffle hunting.
