These three breeds look superficially similar in photos. They are all curly. They all have expressive eyes and compact builds. They are all marketed as allergy-friendly. And yet the experience of living with each one is genuinely different in ways that matter enormously for long-term satisfaction.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a purebred Italian working dog with a documented history spanning several centuries. It was originally bred as a water retriever in the marshlands of Romagna, then refined over generations into the world’s only breed specifically developed for truffle hunting. It has a recognized breed standard, predictable genetics, and a relatively stable temperament profile that has been shaped by hundreds of years of selective breeding for specific working traits. The Cavapoo is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. It is a designer hybrid, not a breed, which means there is no official breed standard and significant variation in size, coat type, temperament, and health from litter to litter. The Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, carrying the same caveats about inconsistency.
This distinction matters enormously when you are making a ten to fifteen year commitment, and we will come back to it repeatedly throughout this article.
Size and Physical Predictability
Adult Lagottos weigh between 24 and 35 pounds and stand 16 to 19 inches at the shoulder. This is consistent across the breed. When you buy a Lagotto puppy from a reputable breeder, you have a very clear picture of what size adult dog you are getting.
Cavapoos range from roughly 12 to 25 pounds depending on whether the Poodle parent was a Toy or Miniature Poodle. The variance within a single litter can be significant. Two puppies from the same parents can grow into dogs of noticeably different sizes.
Cockapoos have an even wider range, from around 12 pounds in the smallest Toy Cockapoo variants up to 30 pounds or more in American Cocker crosses with Standard Poodles. You are essentially guessing at adult size when you adopt a Cockapoo puppy.

The Coat Question — Shedding and Allergies

The Lagotto has what working dog people call an “off switch.” After adequate physical and mental exercise, it settles completely. It does not pace, bark, or demand attention when its needs are met. The Cavapoo’s temperament blends the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a breed known for being gentle, calm, and deeply devoted but also prone to significant health issues and some separation anxiety, with the Poodle’s intelligence and energy. The result is typically a very affectionate, sociable dog with moderate energy. Cavapoos are often described as velcro dogs that want to be close to their people at all times. For families with someone home frequently, this is endearing. For families where the dog is alone for significant stretches, it can become problematic. Cavapoos can be prone to separation anxiety at a higher rate than average.
The Cockapoo draws from the Cocker Spaniel, a breed with a friendly, enthusiastic temperament and a retrieving instinct, crossed with the Poodle. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, one of the Cavapoo’s parent breeds, is one of the most health-compromised breeds in the world. The vast majority of Cavaliers will develop mitral valve disease, a serious heart condition, at some point in their lives. Many also develop syringomyelia, a neurological condition caused by the skull being too small for the brain. These are serious, often costly, and emotionally difficult conditions to manage. Responsible Cavapoo breeders will health test their Cavalier parents extensively, but the genetic risk cannot be eliminated through testing alone.
Cocker Spaniels are generally healthier than Cavaliers but carry their own breed-specific risks including ear infections, eye conditions, and certain autoimmune disorders.
The Lagotto Romagnolo’s primary genetic health concerns are Lagotto Storage Disease (LSD), Benign Familial Juvenile Epilepsy (JE), and Hyperuricosuria (HUU). All three conditions are fully screenable through DNA testing. A responsible breeder can guarantee that their puppies are not at risk for any of these conditions by testing both parents and only breeding clear-to-clear pairings. All three are trainable, intelligent dogs. The Poodle is consistently ranked among the most intelligent breeds in the world, and its influence on the Cavapoo and Cockapoo brings high trainability to both hybrids. The Lagotto is similarly intelligent, problem-oriented, and food-motivated.
Where they differ is in focus and independence. The Lagotto’s working heritage means it is oriented toward a goal, toward using its nose, finding something, solving a problem. This makes it extremely well-suited to structured activities like nose work, scent detection, and truffle training, but it also means it can be somewhat selectively focused. A Lagotto doing something it finds deeply interesting may need more convincing to stop than a Cavapoo would.
Cavapoos and Cockapoos tend to be slightly more biddable in a general obedience context, meaning they are often quicker to redirect and more continuously attentive to their handler. For first-time dog owners who want a very smooth training experience with minimal independent streak, both hybrids can feel easier in the early stages.
For owners who want to engage in scent work, truffle training, or nose work activities, the Lagotto’s natural instinct is genuinely unmatched.
The Cost Picture Over Time
Upfront, the Lagotto Romagnolo typically costs more than a Cavapoo or Cockapoo from a reputable breeder. Choose a Lagotto Romagnolo if you want a purebred dog with predictable genetics, consistent temperament, a reliably low-shedding coat, and a companion that will genuinely engage with you intellectually and physically. You should be comfortable with a moderate grooming commitment and some investment in mental stimulation and activity. You want a dog that will be with your family for fifteen years or more.
Choose a Cavapoo if you want a smaller, very gentle, maximally affectionate dog and are comfortable with the health risks associated with the Cavalier parent. You should have someone home frequently to prevent separation anxiety and be prepared for potential cardiac health costs in later years.
Choose a Cockapoo if you want an energetic, social, enthusiastic companion with a slightly more robust health profile than the Cavapoo. You should be prepared for a higher daily exercise requirement and accept the coat unpredictability that comes with the hybrid.
